The Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider underwent the same mechanical revisions as the Giulietta Sprint over the years, including the eventual availability of more powerful Spider Veloce variants. The 101-series Giulietta Spider (Series II) debuted at the September 1959, Frankfurt Auto Show. Most easily distinguished by the round reflectors mounted beneath revised taillights and by the addition of a lid for the glove compartment, the 101 also received a 50 mm (2.0 in) longer wheelbase, with correspondingly longer doors for easier access to the cockpit. In 1961 the Series III arrived, with larger taillights, an ashtray near the shifter on the floor, and a cigarette lighter on the dashboard. The Spider was discontinued in 1962, shortly after the introduction of the larger-engined Giulia Spider. The Giulia Spider can be easily identified by a bump in the bonnet with a faux chromed vent at the leading edge, necessary to clear the somewhat taller 1570 cc engine. The Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider featured in many French and Italian movies from the 50’s and 60’s, but in the 1973 movie the Day of the Jackal the assassin used a Alfa Romeo Giulia Spider not the Giulietta Spider. The Alfa Romeo Giulietta became a symbol of Italian style and cinematic glamour. The movies that featured a Giulietta Spider are:
- La Dolce Vita (1960): Federico Fellini’s iconic film includes a Giulietta Spider, fitting perfectly into the movie’s stylish Roman atmosphere.
- Plein Soleil (1960): The original adaptation of The Talented Mr. Ripley (starring Alain Delon) features a Giulietta Spider, reinforcing the film’s sun‑soaked Mediterranean aesthetic.
- L’eclisse (1962): Michelangelo Antonioni’s modernist classic includes the Giulietta Spider, again highlighting its popularity in Italian cinema of the era.
- Les Félins (1964): A French thriller starring Alain Delon and Jane Fonda, where the Giulietta Spider appears as part of the film’s chic European setting.
- The Black Orchid (1958): A Giulietta Spider is featured in this drama starring Sophia Loren and Anthony Quinn.
- La ragazza del palio (1958): One of the earliest film appearances of the Giulietta Spider.
- Milou en mai (1990): A later appearance in a French drama set during the May 1968 events.
We celebrate this beautiful little convertible that mirrors the face of Alfa Romeo until today with a white Alfa Romeo Giulietta Spider…

David Dunbar Buick (September 17, 1854 – March 5, 1929) was a Scottish-born American inventor, widely known for founding the Buick Motor Company. He headed this company and its predecessor from 1899–1906, thereby helping to create one of the most successful nameplates in United States motor vehicle history. In early 1902, he established the Buick Manufacturing Company, with the objectives of marketing engines to other car companies, and manufacturing and selling its own cars. Manufacturing and development problems ensued, and, at the end of 1902, Buick was out of money with only one car to show for his work. The concentration on development had produced the revolutionary "Valve-in-Head" overhead valve engine. This method of engine construction produces a much more powerful engine than the rival side valve engine design used by all other manufacturers at the time. Overhead valve engines are used by most car manufacturers today, but now only General Motors (GM) and Chrysler produce the "push-rod" variant with any regularity. Since overhead cam engines are design variants of overhead valve engines, all modern engines are derivatives of Buick's invention. The money ran out again, and in 1903 Buick was forced to raise more money via a $5,000 loan (equivalent to $179,000 in 2025) from a friend and fellow car enthusiast, Benjamin Briscoe. With this financial help, Buick formed the Buick Motor Company, which would eventually become the cornerstone of the General Motors empire. We celebrate his birthday with a scale model iconic Buick Skylark…
Happy Birthday
